Windows’ users have always had it easy. For many years developers concentrated on the Microsoft operating system as that was always the most prevalent, with just 3 million macs sold annually in the few years following the millennium. Even in the modern age where many people own Apple devices and computers, with Apple now shipping close to 20 million Macs every year, the emphasis is still on Windows. Mac owners have played second fiddle for some time, and have often argued that there isn’t enough available for them, but they can still play on half of the poker sites that Windows’ users can, they can still play on a handful of the top games and use many of the top apps, but what about Linux users? According to estimations there are only 75 million of them worldwide, which is a fraction of the nearly 3 billion internet users out there, but they deserve some compatibility, right?
There are no poker sites available for Linux, and therefore very little choice. They can, of course, play through a web browser, but these days many poker sites are geared towards downloaded clients and even those that do allow browser play tend not to pay much attention to the client, which means it is slow and buggy.
Best Linux Compatible Websites Using Wine !
Full Tilt Poker has a no-download client that Linux users can play though, and this is the second largest poker site in the world so it is certainly worth checking out. The client itself is not great, certainly not as good as the download version, but it’s passable. The Full-Tilt site itself is also definitely worth a look. It is not as big or as impressive as it once was, but this is where Zoom Poker was first created and it also used to be the base for many poker millionaires such as Phil Ivey. It was also home to Tom Dwan, who played under the username durrrr, but he ceased play in 2011.
888 Poker also has such as option, but as stated above this can be very buggy and several people have experienced regular disconnections, which can be troublesome in poker tournaments as by the time you get back on, you can be folded out of the tournament. 888 Poker know that this happens to a lot of their players, but they don’t seem to care and certainly don’t offer much compensation. Several players have been kicked out of poker tournaments due to disconnections and have been unable to get back in, losing hundreds or thousands as a result, only for 888 Poker to give them nothing but excuses in return.
SkyPoker also has a no-download client, but again, this is often very slow. When it comes to customer support you can’t do much better than SkyPoker, and they also have some very good tournaments and an expanding list of poker pros supporting them. SkyPoker even has its own TV channel, which those registered with Sky TV can watch by tuning into channel 861.
Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux software, once said, “The Linux philosophy is ‘Laugh in the face of danger’. Oops. Wrong one. ‘Do it yourself’. Yes, that’s it.” But there is something available to help Linux users, a way for them to get the poker software on their computers, and in this case they don’t have to do it entirely on their own. It goes by the name of Wine, an application that works with the Linux operating system and allows users to play software typically reserved for the Windows operating systems. Wine can also be used with Mac and other non-Windows operating systems, but more often than not it is used with Linux.
Wine was first created in 1993, and although the goals and the program itself was a little different back then, it has been through many incarnations over the years and today it stands as the best way for Linux users to broaden the capabilities of their operating system. Mac users tend to find alternative methods, but when it comes to Linux there are few, if any, alternative methods, which makes Wine a godsend.
It has been estimated that there are several million users of the Wine program worldwide. To become one of them, simply click onto the project website http://www.winehq.org, which also includes all of the information you need to get the program up and running.
Poker Sites for Wine Users
Pokerstars is by far the biggest poker site out there, and luckily for Linux users everywhere, it is available through the Wine client. Not only does Pokerstars sponsor some of the biggest live events, but it also hosts many high profile online events of its own, such as the Spring Championship of Online Poker and the World Championship of Online Poker, the latter of which gives away close to $10 million dollars every year. It is also home to the biggest tournaments in online poker, with the Sunday Million promising to create a Pokerstars’ millionaire every week.
Providing that you have a full updated version of the Wine application, then sites that use the iPoker network should also work on your computer. This network is used by a number of sports books. It has plenty of sit and go’s, along with some guaranteed tournaments and many free-rolls, but it doesn’t have much variety in terms of the poker variants that it offers. There are several choices, but the only ones that have regular action are No-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha. iPoker uses a slightly more graphical interface than some of the more popular poker networks, with static avatars assigned to players based on their position around the table. iPoker is used by some of the biggest gambling sites out there, including Dafabet and Betfair, but these don’t have the best track record when it comes to customer service or promotions for that matter, and there are better options available. These include Paddy Power, William Hill, and Boyle Poker.
Winner also use the iPoker network, but there have been a lot of negative reports about their service and they are best avoided. Mansion Poker also use iPoker and they probably have the best promotions of all of them, as they are strictly a poker site and therefore focus all of their attentions on the game. The same applies to Everest Poker and Poker Flex, although these are newer and have yet to make the same impact as Mansion Poker has made.
The Microgaming network also has a poker room and this works with the Wine client as well. Microgaming is one of the most respected names in the online casino industry, and as well as blackjack and other table games, they are famous for their variety of slot machines and video poker. This is a brand that clearly knows what they are doing when it comes to gambling, and their poker network is as good as you would expect from such a premium brand. They don’t have quite as many big names as iPoker do, but they are gaining some momentum and more and more companies are joining them.
Some of the biggest users of the Microgaming software are BetVictor and Betsson, two very well respected and reputable gambling sites that have been catering for a wide community for some time. Bet Victor is the online arm of Victor Chandler, a name that has been a mainstay in British gambling for decades. Betsson are a Swedish company, and one that has been going strong since the 1960s. These days they boast players from all over the world who rely on the site for their sports betting, casino and gambling.
