Player pooling at 888Poker & WSOP NJ is closing the gap on Party Borgata

For the last 14 months, Party Borgata has stood tall as the clear leader in New Jersey’s nascent online poker market. Due to a recent agreement to share partial liquidity between 888Poker and WSOP NJ, that lead is quickly shrinking.

WSOP NJ and 888Poker, respectively New Jersey’s #2 and #3 most trafficked online poker sites, only began pooling players on Monday, January 12, 2015. Only player bases at low limit cash game tables and a few of the sites’ largest multi-table tournaments were combined, with the rest maintaining a segregated status.888Poker WSOP NJ close gap on New Jersey rival Party Borgata

Now just five days into the partial amalgamation, the traffic statistics on PokerScout have altered dramatically. Let’s take a look at the new 7-day average of online poker cash game traffic at Party Borgata, WSOP NJ and 888Poker, compared to last weekend’s results.

New Jersey Online Poker Traffic
Network Previous Current Change
Party Borgata 160 150 -6.25%
WSOP NJ 95 140 +32.14%
888Poker 90 130 +30.77%
Total 345 420 +17.86

As you can clearly see, the Party Borgata Network, which includes the combined traffic from Party Poker NJ and Borgata Poker websites, has decreased, while both WSOP NJ and 888Poker have seen a phenomenal boost in cash game activity. It’s especially interesting to note that Party Borgata’s traffic is on the decline while in the midst of the Garden State Super Series II (GSSS II) that started on Sunday, Jan 11, scheduled to wrap up on Jan 25.

If we add all of the numbers together, the last five days produced a +17.86% increase in overall traffic at New Jersey’s online poker rooms, up from 345 to 420 at the cash game tables. But due to WSOP NJ and 888Poker only combining part of their player bases, it’s not certain whether those are all genuine players, or if those participating in the pooled low-limit cash games are being counted twice; once on each network.

If that’s the case, it would still represent an overall boost in traffic. Even if we subtracted the +40 players that suddenly appeared on 888Poker, and count only those that showed up on WSOP NJ, the result would be a 9.21% increase from 345 to 380. So either way, regulators in New Jersey – as well as the two online poker operators involved – have to be pleased with the results.
